Faruk Tekbilek, One Truth, World Class Records Omar hails from Turkey and is most famous as a Nai player (the Nai being the Arabic flute which is a very simple piece of reed that has holes pnched in it to produce the musical notes. They come in different length in order to achieve all the notes present in different keys). But the Nai is just one of a long list of instruments he plays on this record and otherwise....how about the bendir, oud, keyboard and a host of different percussion instruments. Also....he does the main vocals on the those cuts that have vocals and, of course, most of the compositions are either his own or are traditional pieces, which he arranged. I guess we can conclude that the guy is pretty talented :-) Anyhow.....it is a great CD all around and a must for those who are interested in Middle Eastern music. It is not a traditional one per say....however, it is definitely rooted in traditional Middle Eastern/Turkish music but with Takbilek's own interpretation and input. The compositions are strong especially the first two cuts (my favorites) with a mystical quality intensified by the warmth of the traditional instruments used (especially the nai, oud and Kanun). The thing that I like the most about this CD/Takbilek's work is that it is boldly original and makes no compromises toward the demands of the World Music market which is flooded with the, so called, Middle Eastern influenced "ambient" music that seems to be the latest "hip" trend. |
